Things to do on Long Island: 11/8 & 11/9



GARDEN CITY:  Under the Sea Holiday Tree at the Long Island Children’s Museum (10am-3pm), located at: 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City. Join us as we create ornaments for the Long Island Festival of Trees. LICM’s holiday tree theme this year will be “under the sea.” Decorate your own sea creature to add a special touch to the holiday tree the Children’s Museum will create to benefit United Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County.

HUNTINGTON: Are you a Gluten-Free family? Or have you always wanted to try going Gluten-Free for your kids butare afraid they won’t like it? Then come out to Eat Good Market for “Sample Saturday” (12-4pm), located at: 140 East Main Street, Huntington. 

SMITHTOWN: Family Fun: Autumn Nature Quest at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve, located at: 581 W Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown (10:30-11:30am). A Scavenger Hunt Course for you to follow at your own pace. You will be supplied with a clear, detailed map of the course, a ‘seeker’s list’, clipboard and pencil. Good luck finding the fascinating and humorous objects on the list. Reservations are required, please call (631)265-1054. Programs are usually ideal for children ages 5 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

SAINT JAMES:  Nosey Balloon Science with Mr.Mouse at Mills Pond House, located at: 660 Rt. 25A, St. James (11am & 1pm).  The Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce two performances of Mr. Mouse puppet shows featuring Katie’s Puppets. Nosey Balloon Science with Mr. Mouse is scheduled Saturday, November 8 at 11 am, and 1 pm.  Professor Rudolphina is working on a silly balloon science experiment. When the balloons disappear, can Mr. Mouse and the bluenose reindeer find them?  Geared especially for young children pre-K to 3rd grade. Children will make puppets after the performance. OAKDALE: Fun for Kids: Call of the Wild at Connetquot River State Park Preserve, located at: 3525 Sunrise Hwy, Oakdale (1:30-3:00pm).  Join us to discover the ways animals communicate with each other, for children ages 5 and up. Reservations are required, please call (631) 581-1072.  

FIRE ISLAND: Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour at Fire Island Lighthouse, located at: 1 Burma Rd, Fire Island (9am).  Follow one of our present day Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds.  This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. Learn how lighthouse Keepers in the 1860’s to 2014 maintained the light.  Includes a tour of the Lens Building which houses our original first order Fresnel Lens. Reservations required, please call (631)661.4876.

MONTAUK:  Seal Hike in Montauk at Montauk Point State Park. Discover the seals that visit our area each winter. Reservations are required, please call (631)668-5000 ext. 201 to reserve your spot. Located at: 2000 Montauk Hwy, Montauk.

SUNDAY, 11/9

MEDFORD: Long Island Model R.R. Engineers 2014 Train Show & Open House at Long Island Model R.R. Engineers, (11am – 5pm), located at:3661 Horseblock Road, Unit P • Medford.  Come on down with the entire family to enjoy over 2,000 square feet of layouts, featuring our HO and N-Scale Railroads.

SATURDAY, 11/8  &  SUNDAY, 11/9

WESTBURY: Get an early jump on the holiday season at Hicks Nurseries with their Animated Christmas Holiday Story, a walk-thru story that features child-sized animated Christmas characters including Santa! AND while your there, drop off your child’s letter to Santa (& GET A LETTER BACK!) Admission is free but donations of non-perishable food items for Long Island Cares are appreciated. (8am-6pm). Located at 100 Jericho Tpke., Westbury.

SYOSSET: GameOn! Xpo 2014, located at: 165 Eileen Way, Syosset (9am-5pm). Take part in competitions, demonstrations, seminars & other attractions. Discover the latest equipment & techniques. Activities for the whole family. Samples and prizes.

NORTHPORT: Hats Off to Dr. Seuss! – National Touring Exhibition at LaMantia Gallery, located at 127 Main Street, Northport (12-6pm). View never before seen hats from Dr. Seuss’s Private Collection along with prints & sculpture from the Art of Dr. Seuss Collection.
