Ice cream: A summer staple, especially during summers on Long Island! There are so many independent ice cream shops to choose from, with owners who take pride in their work. Check the list below for some do-not-miss incredible, homemade ice cream shops on Long Island. Warning: It’s going to be difficult to choose your favorite!

NASSAU: Five Pennies Creamery11 N Park Ave, Rockville Center, (516)608-4344    Plenty of space to sit down in this old-fashioned shop! Fan favorite flavors include Boston Crème Pie, Curious George, Apple Pie, Banana Pudding, and Birthday Cake. They also make their own fresh brownies for the very popular Brownie Sundae!

Gooseberry Grove, 12 E Main Street, Oyster Bay, (516)628-0385      A nostalgic ice cream shop and country store. Choose from homemade ice cream, sherbets, Belgian waffle sundaes, and fudge!

Hicksville Sweet Shop, 75 Broadway, Hicksville, 516-931-0130     This luncheonette is famous for its homemade chocolate flavored ice cream, made from a rich chocolate base – the owner’s own recipe! These friendly owners take great pride in making their ice cream, and have even attended a top confectionary school!

SUFFOLK:  Chandler Square Ice Cream Shop, 30 Chandler Square, Port Jefferson, (631)403-4803    This shop is tucked away on a walkway, and has counter service only (but many places around to sit, or take a stroll on the dock!). So many flavors to choose from, great service, and large portions!

Sweets of the Spoon597 Route 25A, Rocky Point,  (631)849-4771     Boasting hard and soft ice cream, as well as Gelato and Italian ices! Many flavors to choose from and the portion sizes are generous. Not only is their ice cream delicious, they have an awesome Café menu as well!

Sandpiper Ice Cream, 142 Main Street, Greenport, (631)447-1154     If you’re in the mood for more traditional ice cream, this sweet spot is for you! This shop has been in business since 1979, and is a favorite for locals and tourists alike!

Coyle’s Homemade Ice Cream, with TWO locations 75 Howell’s Rd, Bay Shore & 509 Main Street, Islip,  Bayshore (631) 666-2229, Islip: (631) 617-5014    In business since 1985, this old-fashioned ice cream soda shop is very kid friendly! With so many yummy homemade flavors to choose from, you might be here all day! Popular flavors include Banana Oreo, chocolate-raspberry truffle, and Bailey’s Irish Cream. They also have many sugar-free ice cream options.

Wolfie’s Frozen Custard, 42 Woodbine Ave, Northport, (631)754-4850   One of their slogans, “forget everything you ever knew about ice cream,” holds true with their creamy frozen custard! It’s made daily in their store, and includes flavors such as English Toffee, Black Forest Torte, Crème Brulee, and Key Lime.
