Last night I went to see Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey’s Built to Amaze and it was, for lack of a better word, amazing. The show is not your typical circus; it is so much more. The show starts off with a bang with singers and dancers as well as a live band. They got us all pumped up and ready for the show, and from the reactions of the kids around us, they definitely did their job well.
All the traditional circus acts were there including tightrope walkers, clowns, tigers, elephants and acrobats as well as some non-traditional ones including trick poodles and basketball unicyclists. My daughter’s favorite moment of the show was the human cannonball. During the show she asked me in a horrified whisper, “She is going to be shot out of there?” However, it turned out to be the best part of the show for her. Her second favorite part involved a bunny and a snake in the magic act; I won’t tell you what happened and ruin the surprise.
As Built to Amaze is performed in arenas, it doesn’t have the traditional stationary circus setup so sets were continuously changing. I think they did an excellent job changing the sets quickly as well as filling what would have been “downtime” with the dancers and the clowns.
While it might be a little long for younger kids to sit through, I would definitely recommend taking kids 6 and up to see the show, and if you don’t mind only going for part of the show, I would take the younger kids too. Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey set out to amaze and they definitely did.
Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey’s Built to Amaze will be at Nassau Coliseum through Sunday, March 17. Ticket prices start at $20 and go up to $70.
