Famous Celebrity Dads from Long Island

They have names like Joel, Crystal and Stern. They are men who are at the top of their trade in music, movies, and television, and just like their famous, female counterparts from Long Island, they are also dads who have ties to our area. Though there are dozens of famous celebrity dads from Long Island, here our 10 who were born or raised in our region.



Alec, Daniel, Billy and Stephen, otherwise known as the Baldwin brothers, were born and raised in Massapequa. Their family ties run deep through the island. “Mama” Baldwin, Carol, is a breast cancer survivor who founded the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Between them, the Baldwin brothers have 11 children. Alec has one daughter, Ireland (age 17).  Billy has three children with singer Chynna Phillips, Jameson (age 12), Vance (age 10) and Brooke (age 8). Stephen has two daughters, Alia (age 19) & Hailey (age 16). Lastly, Daniel has five children total, daughters Kahlea (age 28), Alexandra (age 18), Avis (age 4) Finley Rae (age 3) and son Atticus (age 16).


Actor, director and writer Ed Burns was born in Woodside but raised in Valley Stream. He briefly attended Chaminade in Mineola before transferring to Hewlett High School. Burns is married to supermodel Christy Turlington and together they have two kids, a daughter Grace (age 9) and a son Finn (age 6)


A New Yorker through and through, Crystal was born in Manhattan but moved to Long Beach as a toddler. After graduating from Long Beach High School in 1965, Crystal attended Nassau Community College and then ultimately obtained his degree from NYU. He and his wife Janice have two daughters, actress Jennifer Crystal Foley (age 39) and Lindsay Crystal (age 35).  Following Hurricane Sandy, Crystal showed that Long Island remains close to his heart, hosting free screenings of his new move Parental Guidance for Lynbrook and Long Beach residents and first responders. The movie opens on Christmas Day 2012.

Best known as the “Piano Man,” Billy Joel’s strong ties to Long Island are evident in much of his life and his music — even naming his first album COLD SPRING HARBOR.  He’s regularly quoted as saying “I’m a Long Islander, and I’m proud to be an Islander.” Raised in Hicksville, he attended Hicksville High School with the class of 1967. However, he did not graduate, deciding to pursue his music career instead of a high school diploma. In 1992, he was awarded his diploma from the very high school he left 25 years earlier. Joel has one daughter, Alexa Ray Joel (27, as of December 29th) with his ex-wife, supermodel Christie Brinkley.

James Todd Smith, better known as “LL Cool J” (standing for Ladies Love Cool James) was born in Bay Shore. This rapper and entrepreneur turned actor is regarded as one of the most successful rap artists of all time. These days “LL” is most often recognized for his role as Sam Hanna on the hit CBS show NCIS: Los Angeles. He has four children, one boy and three girls, Najee (age 23), Italia (age 22), Samaria (age 17) and Nina (age 12) with his wife Simone, a jewelry designer.


This 80’s child star might best be known for his lead role in Karate Kid movies, but Ralph Macchio got his start right here on Long Island. Born in Huntington and raised in Dix Hills, Macchio graduated from Half Hallow Hills West in 1979. He and his wife of 25years, Phyllis, still live on the North Shore and have two children, a daughter Julia (age 20) and a son Daniel (age 16).


Love him or hate him, Bill O’Reilly, a political commentator, author and host of the O’Reilly Factor on Fox New Channel, has strong ties to Long Island. He grew up in Levittown, attended St. Brigid Parochial School in Westbury (where he also got married), attended Chaminade in Mineola and later settled in Manhasset. He has two children, a daughter Madeline (age 14) and a son Spencer (age 9).


80’s rock star Dee Snider is a long-time Long Island guy. Best known as the front man of the heavy metal band Twisted Sister, he has recently back in the spotlight with roles on the A&E reality show about his life called Growing Up Twisted, on Broadway in Rock of Ages, and on NBC’s reality show Celebrity Apprentice. Snider grew up in Baldwin and graduated from Baldwin High in 1973. He and his wife Suzette still live part-time in East Setauket. They have four children, three boys and a girl, Jesse (age 30), Shane (age 24), Cody (age 23) and Cheyenne (age 16).


Funny man Jerry Seinfeld grew up in Massapequa where he attended Birch Lane Elementary School and Massapequa High School. He and his wife Jessica have three children, a daughter, Sascha (age 12), and two sons, Julian (age 9) and Shepherd (age 7). The two have made family a priority, Jerry through his comedy using humor to make light of parenting  and producing kid friendly movies like Bee Movie;  and Jessica though her charities including Baby Buggy, a charity that provides clothing and gear for underprivileged women and children.


Infamous “shock jock,” television host, author and actor Howard Stern hails from both Roosevelt and Rockville Centre.  He attended Washington-Rose Elementary School and Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School until 1969 when the family moved and Stern transferred to South Side High School. He has three daughters, Emily (age 29), Debra (age 26), and Ashley (age 19).
