Our Novembers Mom of the Month is the truly inspiring Fariba Pallas from Miller Place. Her child’s diagnoses of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia inspired her to help other children in need. We celebrate her incredible strength and courage through challenging times.
Fariba is wife to Mike and mom to Jesse, 6 and Jake, 9. Their lives changed March 2011 when doctors informed her of Jesse’s Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. The disease is a fast-growing cancer which usually affects children ages 3 – 7. It occurs when the the body produces a large number of immature white blood cells called lymphocytes. The cancer cells quickly grow and replace normal cells in the bone marrow.
The shocking diagnosis led Fariba to spread awareness about ALL and help others where needed. Fariba volunteers with the John Theissen Children’s Foundation which strives to help sick children by putting a smile on their face. They provide hospitals and child-care facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, offer sick and needy children toys throughout the holiday season and more. Fariba volunteers for any task whether it be manning an event or making and distributing fliers. She also helps care for another child who she has met through her son’s clinic.
Fariba told Long Island Mamas Network that volunteering and assisting others is what helps her cope with her family’s situation and noted that the Miller Place community has become her rock mentally, physically and financially. She could never have come this far without the support and encouragement of others.
In an effort to raise awareness about ALL and help her son and others affected by it, Fariba along with other volunteers have put together a special event. On November 4, 2012 there will be a wonderful opportunity to “give the gift of life” via a Bone Marrow Drive held at Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance (25 Crystal Brook Hollow Road, Mt Sinai). The event will be providing fun entertainment for kids as well as an opportunity to save a life.
Congratulations to Fariba for her deserving honor as our November Mom of the Month!
