Long Island’s Largest Food Drive Expands to Help Hurricane Victims

Calling all Long Islanders! The 4th annual Bethpage Turkey Drive has been expanded this year to collect for Hurricane Sandy victims. Please donate frozen turkeys, shelf stable easy-to-open food items, cleaning supplies and diapers.

The Bethpage “Turkey, Emergency Food & Relief Drive” is taking place on Friday, November 16 from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM – rain or shine – in the parking lot of Bethpage’s main branch located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. In partnership with Bethpage, Cablevision, NY Islanders and Connoisseur Media Partner, all donations go to Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization.

Also, from November 9 – November 30, 2012, Nassau and Suffolk County residents unable to travel to Bethpage’s main branch on November 16th, can drop off all non-perishable donations to any of Bethpage’s 26 branch locations.

Even prior to Hurricane Sandy, 2012 marked a record-breaking year for the number of Long Island families in need. Since 2009, Island Harvest has seen a 161 percent increase in the requests for food and support services with about 65,000 individuals receiving emergency food assistance from the Island Harvest network each week.  Now, following Hurricane Sandy, the numbers have skyrocketed.

Since the first Bethpage Turkey Drive was organized in 2009, hundreds of Long Island residents and volunteers have come out to assist in the collection of over 10,000 turkeys and 26,000 pounds of food, which were then provided to Long Island’s many families in need in time for the holidays.

Please help Long Island’s hurricane victims by making a donation.
