Movies Filmed on Long Island

When thinking of great filming locations for Hollywood blockbusters, Long Island probably doesn’t come to mind. Surprisingly, Long Island has played host to many film crews over the years. Scenes have been filmed in salons, streets, parks, convenience stores and of course in some of Long Island’s Gold Coast mansions.  We’ve compiled a fun list highlighting some of the more recent movies filmed on Long Island in the last 25 years or so that even locals may not know about.

Arthur and Arthur
(the remake – 2011)

Scenes from the original Arthur released in 1981 were filmed at Old Bethpage Village, the Knole Estate and the Caumsett Estate. For the 2011 remake of this romantic comedy that starred Russell Brand and Jennifer Garner, a location in Long Island was once again used as a backdrop — this time it was Old Westbury Gardens.

Batman Forever (1995)
Featuring Val Kilmer as Batman, Chris O’Donnell as Robin and Jim Carey as The Riddler, the superhero action flick Batman Forever included scenes at the Webb Institute located in Glen Cove, New York. The Webb Institute portrayed Wayne Manor, also known as Bruce Wayne/Batman’s home.

The Bounty Hunter (2010)
In this romantic action comedy film, Gerard Butler played a Bounty Hunter who’s next target is his ex-wife, played by Jennifer Aniston. The opening scene from the movie was filmed on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway.

Crocodile Dundee 2 (1988)
This adventure and comedy movie starring Paul Hogan started off in New York and then ended up Down Under. While in New York, one of the places they filmed was at Eagle’s Nest mansion at the Vanderbilt Museum.

Desperately Seeking Susan (1985)
Who could forget Madonna’s first big Hollywood film that also spawned a top pop song? Scenes from this comedy-drama movie which also starred Rosanna Arquette were filmed at nuBest salon in Manhasset.

Men In Black II (2002)
Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones starred in this science fiction action comedy. The Post Office scene where Will Smith tried to get Tommy Lee Jones to return to MIB was filmed at the Fire Island Lighthouse.

In and Out (1997)
In and Out, a romantic comedy starring Kevin Kline and Joan Cusack, was filmed at several Long Island locations. Scenes from the movie were shot on Main Street in Northport, as well as in Cold Spring Harbor. Darlene’s Diner in the movie is actually Shipwreck Diner in Northport.

The Devil’s Advocate (1997)
In this thriller, Al Pacino starred as the Devil and Keanu Reeves as the Devil’s son making for a hot (forgive the pun) cast. Many of the scenes from the movie were filmed at the Knole Estate in Old Westbury.

The Manchurian Candidate (2004)
The political thriller starred two Hollywood A-Listers, Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep. Scenes from the movie were filmed at the Phipps Estate at Old Westbury Gardens. The Estate depicted the home of Eleanor Shaw, Meryl Streep’s character in the film. Other scenes were filmed at Northport Harbor.

The Nanny Diaries (2007)
Scarlett Johannsson starred as Nanny in this comedy drama based on the popular novel with the same name. In the film, areas of East Hampton and Southampton double as Nantucket.
