Summer Theater at the Gateway Playhouse

Located in a converted red barn in Bellport, the Gateway Playhouse has been bringing summer theater to Long Island since 1950. Since its opening, the Gateway Playhouse has been a family business and it is now run by the third generation of the Pomeran family, Robin and David Allan; their mother Ruth (Pomeran) Allan was the daughter of the original owners.

The Gateway Playhouse features five Broadway shows each summer and is well known for showcasing top Broadway talent in their shows. Currently, the Playhouse is featuring The Rat Pack through July 14. The next show that will be featured is the musical 9 to 5.

Along with its Broadway series, the Gateway Playhouse also offers a children’s theater series every summer. This summer features the following shows: 3 Princesses and a Wizard, Pinocchio, The Wizard of Oz, Aesop’s Fables and Alice in Wonderland.

All of these shows are performed by professional touring companies that make a stop at the Playhouse. The Gateway Playhouse will also produce one children’s show this summer, The Little Mermaid Jr., which will feature its youth ensemble.

Long Island Mamas attended the first performance in the children’s series, 3 Princesses and a Wizard. The theater was packed with children who couldn’t wait to watch the show. While the set was minimal, the characters kept the children entranced. There were interactive segments and lots of songs that all the children in the theater seemed to love. The length of the show, 45 minutes, seemed to be just right for the pint-sized audience.

After the show, the characters lined up in the hallway for a meet and greet with the children. The Playhouse had refreshments for sale that could be taken into the theater. They were also selling tiaras and wands so the girls and boys in attendance could pretend to be princesses and wizards too.

The season at the Gateway Playhouse runs from May 16 – September 9.
