Sweet Summer Smoothie Recipe of the Month – Featuring Lewin Farms

Strawberries are growing all over at the local You-Pick farms in Long Island.  Strawberries are one of the healthiest foods as they are low in calories, full of vitamins and nutrients, and high in antioxidants. This succulent fruit is good for the eyes and has been found to help prevent cancer.

In May the strawberries will be ready to pick.  Families can visit a local farm to get some fresh strawberries to take home. We’ve picked a quick, easy, and refreshing smoothie recipe using strawberries and other fruits for our readers to try out. We’ve also highlighted one of the local farms known for their delicious strawberries.

Lewin Farms
Opening to the public around Memorial Day, Lewin Farms provides Long Island with a huge variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. Lewin Farms was Long Island’s first You-Pick farm. It’s 1,100 acre farm is family-owned and operated over four generations. Locally grown produce is sold in the farm stand as well as available seasonally for picking. The strawberries at Lewins You Pick Farm will be ready for picking in May.

Sweet Summer Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Greek vanilla yogurt like Dannon® Oikos
  • 1/2 cup frozen strawberries, unsweetened
  • 1/2 cup frozen peach slices, unsweetened
  • 1/2 medium banana, peeled
  • 1/2 cup low-fat milk

Directions

Place all ingredients in a blender; process until smooth and serve immediately.
If using fresh fruit, add 2/3 cup ice to the recipe.

    We prefer the low spray or fully organic farms for berry picking, especially with little ones that often will eat as you pick, for organic u pick try golden earth worm in Jamesport or Patty’s Berries and Bunches in Riverhead.
