Places for Kids to Make Pottery – Long Island

Looking for a unique activity?  Want to make a special gift that anyone will love?  Children as well as adults enjoy painting their own pottery. It’s a special birthday party idea, a great plan for a Ladies Night Out and a fun activity to spend quality time with children. Here’s what to expect at a pottery making venue as well as a list of places for kids to make pottery on Long Island.

There are five basic steps to painting pottery. First, pick a piece.  Most pottery locations offer close to one hundred different pieces to choose from. After finding the perfect piece, plan a design. Think about what the finished product is going to look like. Next, pick the colors that best fit the design. Typically studios allow up to six colors on one piece. Smaller pieces tend to look better with fewer colors, but the choice is always up to the creator. After finalizing the color choices, paint, paint, paint! Studios also offer stencils, stamps, sponges and writing tools to assist in creating the perfect piece. Finally, when the designing and painting is complete, the studio then glazes and fires the piece to harden and become a food safe piece to enjoy for years to come.

Most studios accept walk-ins up to one hour prior to closing. Allowing enough time to design and paint is very important. Studios vary in their fees for pieces as well as for studio fees which include paints, stencils, stamps, glazing, and firing. There are some all-inclusive studios as well, so the price of the piece will also include all materials necessary to complete. The glazing and firing process usually takes up to two weeks to finish, so returning to the studio to pick up the finished piece will be necessary.
