Wild Flours, a quaint bakery tucked within Huntington Village, is a well-loved destination for families seeking delicious natural baked goods. Those with children requiring special diets will especially appreciate this wholesome bake shop.
The family-owned business, founded by sisters Carolyn Arcario and Mary Mucci, opened in late 2010. For many years both sisters had suffered from gluten issues, thus inspiring them to start the bakery. Carolyn reveals, “We needed to eat gluten-free foods, and we always felt so deprived. There was never anything to indulge in. I loved to bake at home, and I realized I needed to do this [start the business]…it was something I felt compelled to do.”
Utilizing her skills from culinary school, Carolyn created recipes with a mission to provide the most delicious baked goods using the best quality ingredients and serve them in a warm and welcoming environment.
Carolyn emphasizes, “Everything is baked from scratch. Nothing is store-bought or pre-mixed.”
All Wild Flours baked goods are gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-free. Many of the items are vegan. Refined sugar is replaced with organic natural sweeteners. Its coffee, tea, and baked goods are made with filtered water. The Bakery uses organic or free range eggs, and sources from fair trade and locally-sourced vendors whenever possible.
Wild Flours offers cookies, scones, muffins, brownies, cupcakes, pies, breads, cream puffs, turnovers, truffles, tarts, and cakes. Though baked goods represent its core items, the shop has expanded its menu to fulfill customers’ requests.
Patrons asked for breakfast items, so Wild Flours began making quiche. Customers wanted sandwiches made with the Bakery’s homemade breads, so the sisters created “Lunch-To-Go” items. During cold winter months people requested soup, so that is now on the menu. The always-popular-pizza, baked by Carolyn’s brother, is served on Saturday’s only.
Carolyn says she tries to create new menu items every week to provide fresh choices to returning customers. Many of the dedicated Wild Flour enthusiasts include parents of kids with allergies and other special dietary needs. Carolyn states, “What’s really gratifying is that people come in here and say, ‘Oh my gosh, my kid can come to a bakery and actually pick something out without having to worry about it!’”
In addition to the baked goods made with care, Wild Flours eco-friendly philosophy extends to other aspects of its business. Its biodegradable plates, cups, and utensils are made from corn, and bakery boxes are made from 100% recycled materials. The Bakery uses unbleached products, including parchment paper, wherever possible and reduces waste by recycling. Wild Flours will also bake and provide pies in stainless steel pie plates instead of aluminum upon request. When it comes to cleaning, non-toxic cleaning agents are used in the kitchen and dining area. Even the venue itself is conscientious, using eco-friendly stain, natural wood and building materials in the renovation of the Wild Flours space.
Wild Flour, the only gluten-free bakery in Huntington, will ship products upon request. Please visit its website for more information.
