Huntington boasts plenty of indoor spaces specializing in activities for kids. Many of these are large franchised play centers well known to parents. We like these places, but also want to highlight smaller independently-owned businesses that also cater to children. Here are several we’re happy to support. Please call businesses for costs as they may vary depending on the programs utilized.

Long Island Aardvarks
For “little aardvarks” age 4 months to 4 years, this musical program combines song, dance, and rhythm to create an interactive experience for young children. The classes play the songs of local musician David Weinstone; families may recognize his Taxi song featured on Nick Jr. Lisa Ammon, a performer, teacher, and dancer who has shined in Off Broadway productions, teaches all the classes. Props like shakers, scarves, and hand instruments engage little ones during the 45 minutes sessions. In addition to its Huntington location, Long Island Aardvarks also holds classes in Bayside, Port Washington, Great Neck, Roslyn, and Bellmore (opening Spring 2012).

The owners of Variations expanded their residential house to include dance studios. This intimate and professional setting fosters dancers for ages 2-17. Variations teaches classical ballet, modern dance, jazz & tap, musical theater, hip hop and more. Its students do not participate in competitions or recitals, thus reducing costs to parents who will not have to purchase wallet-busting one-time use costumes. The teachers focus solely on dance technique and artistry during its academic year and summer programs. For parents looking for shorter sessions, Variations hosts 11-week Music Together classes for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
