Martin Luther King Day falls on January 16th. Families can reflect and celebrate by attending events throughout Long Island to commemorate the life of this historic figure who championed equal rights for African Americans in America.

Dreaming with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Open for ages 5 years and up, this event explores the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by looking at his life, speeches, and visions. Children can create peace paintings to celebrate the day.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration
To honor Dr. King’s life, the city of Glen Cove is holding a commemoration lead by the city’s mayor and supported by local elected officials, Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laria, representatives of community organizations, and members of the clergy. Meet in front of the First Baptist Church on Continental Place for a traditional march reminiscent of Dr. King’s steps toward equality and voting rights. From the church, marchers will proceed through downtown Glen Cove to the Wunsch Arts Center on Forest Avenue. A celebratory program in the auditorium, decorated with the artwork of our school district’s children, follows the march.

Love, Peace, and Justice Interfaith Celebration for MLK Day

Martin Luther King Day Craft: Harry Potter in the Whaling Museum
Kids can have a magical Martin Luther King Day at the Whaling Museum. Make a craft, go on a Harry Potter Scavenger Hunt, visit the Potion Table, and create a wand and watch. For ages 5-12. Please register.

Martin Luther King Day of Service Project
In keeping with the spirit of servicing others, the Theta Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will host the 2012 MLK Jr. Day of Service Project. All ages are welcome to volunteer to paint and decorate two classrooms at the United North Amityville Youth Organization (U.N.A.Y.O) facility. Please bring a paint roller. The sorority is also collecting learning materials donations (such as SAT Prep books).

MLK National Service Day Sports Equipment Drive
The Long Island Volunteer Center is honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of helping others by holding a donation drive for gently used sports equipment. Partnering with Modell’s Sporting Goods and Children’s Sport Connection, the donation will benefit at-risk children. Please donate basketballs, footballs, lacrosse balls and sticks, soccer balls, and tennis balls and racquets.

We Can End Childhood Hunger
For all ages, this event features a choir concert, exhibit of children’s anti-hunger projects, and renowned storyteller Heather Forest. In a partnership with rockCANroll to beat childhood hunger, the Suffolk Y JCC is asking for donations of healthy foods for local food pantries.
