Review: Don’t Let the Pigeon Run This App! by Mo Willems

Mo Willems and that pigeon have entered the electronic age and now kids can create their own Pigeon-Inspired Stories in Disney Publishing Worldwide’s release of “Don’t Let the Pigeon Run This App!” for Apple Mobile Devices. This new app for Apple Mobile Devices, such as iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch is available here.  Mo Willems, who is the author of Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!; the Knufflebunny books and the Elephant and Piggie books is the lead creator, designer, main voice, writer and illustrator of this app. He was approached many times about doing an app but he was quite hesitant about the whole idea. As electronic books became more popular he wasn’t too keen on getting involved because he likes having a book in the hands of children;  his books are his children and he puts a great deal of time in each one – some are a disappointment and some exceed his expectations. When he decided to take on this project he wanted the involvement of children to be the main focus –  he wanted it to be essential that the child is working in tandem with the app.

“Interactivity has always been a key to the Pigeon books,” said Willems. “‘Don’t Let the Pigeon Run This App!’ takes that interactivity to the point where the child is not only the audience, but the author as well. I can’t wait to see what awesome ideas kids will come up with. They’re going to put the Pigeon through the wringer!”

Willems wants the kids to be authors with him, to draw his characters and to create their own adventures for pigeon just like he does.

Children at the launch party were playing with this app on several iPads and were navigating through it was ease, enjoyment and smiles.  Children ages 2-5 can start with Egg or Chick and older kids from age 5-9 can play with Big Pigeon on this app. There are 3 different reading modes, simple multiple choice pictures to choose from; there is story-telling mode, drawing, and the driver even says the child-authors name in the story.  My 4 year old enjoyed trying this app out at the launch party. It is available now to purchase for $6.99 at the app store.   This app is worth the price and the purchase of this app is highly recommended for hours of creative fun.
