As a mother of a girl in kindergarten, I am starting to become very aware of the effects peer pressure and society are having on our children. Like many parents, I want to prepare myself as much as I can for that day my daughter will come home crying because someone made fun of her or said mean things to her. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to have advocates for children who can help parents and teachers support school-aged children.
One such advocate is Gina Otto, an international speaker and social entrepreneur who has written an award-winning book called “Cassandra’s Angel”. This empowering book tells the story of a young girl who feels misunderstood and alone when everyone around her keeps telling her she can’t do anything right and just doesn’t fit in. She then meets an angel who encourages her and gives her a new perspective that changes her way of thinking.
“Cassandra’s Angel” is being performed as a 30-minute musical and is on a nation-wide road tour as part of the “Change My World Now 20 City Tour”. I recently attended the very first showing of the musical at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and found it to be a lovely production. Standing out of the 20-something-year-old performers was the lead who was absolutely adorable with a sweet, pitch-perfect voice and was very appropriately cast as the main character in the story. The musical is scheduled to perform on the tour all across the nation in various venues, including public schools.
If you want to see a performance of the musical, head out to Roosevelt Field mall. On October 8th there are two performances scheduled at the North Court at 1pm & 3pm, as well as a book signing by Gina Otto. You will also get an opportunity to meet the cast at an “after party” at the Little Miss Matched store at the mall.
