Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts

Ever wondered about the benefits of martial arts for children? They provide a whole body workout and teach many skills including discipline and focus. Tiger Schulmann’s is a very popular mixed martial arts academy which offers classes for both children and adults.

I brought my son Vincent to the Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts in Carle Place, NY when he was 3 years old to enroll him in the Cubs class. I wanted him to get some structured exercise, to learn a life skill and to give him an outlet to release all the energy that a 3 year old needs to get rid of in a positive way.  I also wanted him to learn discipline from someone other than me.

When he first put on the uniform (white pants and a black t-shirt with the tiger logo) he was excited to get started on earning his belt. He learned to stand at attention, to show respect to his teachers, to properly reply when spoken to, and to stay focused on the task at hand.  I enjoyed what he got out of it so much that I started taking classes myself.  Initially I started to lose weight and get back into shape after having a baby, but it became more than that. I enjoyed having an outlet of my own to release stress and tension.  I even trained through my third pregnancy until the 8th month and it helped me during labor.  It took 3 years and now I am a Black Belt in mixed Martial Arts and feel confident that I can get myself out of a situation if I ever needed to defend myself.

Classes are 45 minutes for children ages 3-8, kids 8-15; classes for adults 16 and up are 1 hour long.  The Core class is a total body workout starting and ending with whole class stretches; punching and kicking combinations, cardio and muscle building, while concentrating on flexibility, timing, speed, agility and strength all in 1 hour. You will see and feel the changes in your body very quickly. Kickboxing (which requires you to purchase the proper equipment) and Grappling (which requires equipment such as head gear like wrestlers use, a mouth guard, a long sleeve saberskin tiger schulmann’s rash guard shirt and gi pants) are offered as well.   Contact your locate Tiger Schulmann’s school for more details. Deals are always available. When you sign up, you are given a black t-shirt with the Tiger Schulmanns’ logo, a white pair of gi pants and a set of gloves to use in core classes.

Taking classes at TSMMA became a family affair because my husband joined soon after and he is 1 belt away from taking his black belt test (which is a day-long test of strength, discipline, executing proper techniques and displaying a desire to excel); currently, my 6 year old daughter and 4 1/2 year old son are taking classes. Vincent went on to complete in 2 tournaments at the ages of 5 and 6, and came home with a huge 3rd place trophy in Kickboxing against peers from other Tiger Schulmann’s schools that were the same color belt and age as him.

With each belt, came a positive change in Vincent; he became more confident, more discipline and was in good physical shape.  The belt system is a progression through 12 colored belts starting with a white belt, then a hi white belt, blue, hi blue, yellow, hi yellow, green, hi green, red, hi red, brown, hi brown then testing to prepare for the black belt test and you will only be approved by your sensei to be allowed to take your test.

He continued to take classes until he was 8 years old, then other interests in sports and school obligations lead us to making the decision to take some time off from karate classes for now.
