Review: Jonathan L. Ielpi Firefighters Park in Great Neck

On a hot day in July, we discovered this park in Great Neck and we had to go — especially when one of our readers mentioned that it had a great spray area. Formerly called Grace Avenue Park, this little oasis, now called Jonathan L. Ielpi Firefighters Park (AKA Jon’s Park) was named after Firefighter Jonathan L. Ielpi, who passed away on 9/11.  The park is located very close to the Great Neck LIRR Station and it’s perfect for cooling off on a hot day. We found ample street parking (right across from a metered lot that was shady). We really liked was the spray area. The Firefighter theme was evident — with a hose sprayer, a dalmatian dog sprayer and a huge red fireman themed arch.

There were two play areas: with a little climbing structure and swings and another area with climbing areas (both with sand). The bathrooms were spotless and we saw people hanging out in the gazebo. Be sure to make sure your children (and yourself) are covered in plenty of sunscreen. The spray area and playground gets a lot of sun during the prime hours. The Gazebo side was very shaded.
