The Family Guide to Port Washington: Organic Farmer’s Market, Landmark Park Playground

We went to Port Washington in search of fresh fruits and vegetables and some exercise for our kids. What did we find? Read on!

Port Washington Organic Farmers’ Market

While it wasn’t large – there were 8 vendors when we went –  we were thrilled that it was totally organic and I am sure it will be larger the next time we go. Golden Earthworm Farm of Jamesport was a vendor and their produce looked fantastic. Also notable is Hell’s Kitchen Bakery, who offered yummy bread, muffins, and organic coffee. They were laid back and didn’t stress when my 5 1/2 year old helped himself to a muffin (so I quickly purchased more for the rest of my family to eat).We sat down (under a tent) at their tables to enjoy their scrumptious baked goods.

There was another farm, a pickle and cheese vendor, a flower vendor, a soap vendor, a breakfast cookie company and fresh fish. All the vendors greeted the regulars and were friendly to the kids. We were really impressed that they encouraged tasting and educated children about what they were selling.

There’s public parking and its right next to the water (your kids will love seeing all the boats). There’s a little Tugboat that kids can run around (outside of) — but you can’t go in it.  Sunset Park is right next door and offers a bandshell for live music and movie night, but not much space for kids to get their ya ya’s out. But there is a place for your kids to get some exercise —  leave the car and take a walk up to the Landmark on Main Street, which offers the Jeanne Rimsky Theater and the Port Washington’s Child Care Center.  There’s a large playground (the Child Care Center’s is off limits, but there is another one), Don’t miss the lush green lawn to run around on and the really cool sprinkler area. The day we were there, there was fresh fruit and juice out on a table. On the way home, grab some kebabs at Ayhan’s Shish Kebab Restaurant (the kids will love the spinach and feta pizza). If you want less formal, there’s the Harbor Deli. Grab some dessert at Ralph’s Ices and check out the Dolphin Bookshop after.
