Old Bethpage Village Restoration

Have you ever wanted to show your kids what life was like on Long Island before cell phones, iPads, video games and basically every other electronic device known to man? Well, good news: you can. And it’s right here on Long Island.

Old Bethpage Village Restoration is the perfect place for you and your kids to step back in time, all the way back to the 19th century. Your family can see exactly what life was like on Long Island throughout the 209 acre village. There are over 50 buildings that date back to before the civil war, that have been restored to their original glory. If that’s not intriguing enough, each building has its own important place in history. You and your family can walk in the steps of some original Long Islanders.

The village really comes to life thanks in part to the actors who walk around dressed in period costumes and interact with the visitors. There are even Civil War reenactments. You can take a walk to the general store, wander over to the tavern for a pint, or tour one of the authentic homes for a real treat. Your kids are guaranteed to be in awe. How often is it that you actually get to see a living museum?

Whether you have toddlers, tweens, or teens, there is really so much to see at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. There are also tons of special events that are held during the year, from car shows to the “1863 Thanksgiving.” There are even Candlelight Evenings around the holidays, where everything in the village is lit by candles. Your kids can really see just how good they have it, and may even feel more appreciative of modern conveniences, like electricity.

Seven acres on the southern end of the Village belongs to Restoration Farm, a sustainable, organic farm. You can visit their farm stand in the Village’s parking lot starting June 20th, and every following Saturday from 12:00pm – 2:00pm through September. Restoration Farm also has a CSA program (community supported agriculture) where you can purchase a vegetable share which entitles you to a share of the produce and also includes pick-your-own herbs and flowers. For more information on the farm, visit their website.

The Village is located at 1303 Round Swamp Road, in Old Bethpage. The hours of operation are from 10:00am – 5:00pm, Wednesday through Sunday. Admission to the museum is $10 for adults, $7 for kids 5-12, seniors, and volunteer fire fighters. Kids under 5 are free. For more information, call 516-572-8400.
